I grew up in southern Manitoba, Canada, in a small rural community and longed to see the world and its variety of peoples. In my mid-twenties, working overseas in a residential childcare program, I found that I very much enjoyed working with people. Twenty years later, I graduated with a degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and began seeing clients in private practice. My wife (a Licensed Mental Health Counselor) and I started Renovo Counseling in 2010 in Marion, Indiana. We have three wonderful (adult) children, living in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Aurora, Colorado.
I chose to study Marriage & Family Therapy in graduate school because it seemed to fit best with the way I believe we experience life - as a relational system. I believe that our individuality is shaped by our genetic makeup, our choices, and our experiences - especially our experiences with others.
My approach to therapy is thus systemic in nature and highly influenced by Attachment Theory (how we form and maintain close relationships from birth on). I utilize an eclectic mix of cognitive, behavioral and emotional approaches in order to meet the client at their point of need.
I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) in the state of Indiana (Lic # 35001718A - 2010). I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Summit Christian College, double majoring in Bible and Psychology (1992). I earned a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at Indiana Wesleyan University (2006). I adhere to the ethical and legal standards of the licensing board of the state of Indiana.
