Therapists

Gary Martens, MA, LMFT

About Me

I grew up in southern Manitoba, Canada, in a small rural community and longed to see the world and its variety of peoples.  In my mid-twenties, working overseas in a residential childcare program, I found that I very much enjoyed working with people.  Twenty years later, I graduated with a degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and began seeing clients in private practice.  My wife (a Licensed Mental Health Counselor) and I started Renovo Counseling in 2010 in Marion, Indiana.  We have three wonderful (adult) children, living in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Aurora, Colorado.

Approach

I chose to study Marriage & Family Therapy in graduate school because it seemed to fit best with the way I believe we experience life - as a relational system.  I believe that our individuality is shaped by our genetic makeup, our choices, and our experiences - especially our experiences with others.

My approach to therapy is thus systemic in nature and highly influenced by Attachment Theory (how we form and maintain close relationships from birth on).  I utilize an eclectic mix of cognitive, behavioral and emotional approaches in order to meet the client at their point of need.

Qualifications

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) in the state of Indiana (Lic # 35001718A - 2010). I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Summit Christian College, double majoring in Bible and Psychology (1992).  I earned a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at Indiana Wesleyan University (2006)I am a member in good standing of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and adhere to the ethical and legal standards of both the AAMFT and the state of Indiana.
